He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and began his career as a jazz musician, playing in various bands in the city. He eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a composer and arranger for television shows such as The Twilight Zone, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and The Wild Wild West. He also composed the theme song for the popular 1960s sitcom, The Munsters. Friedman was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the television series, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. He also composed the music for the films, The Great Race and The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. Friedman passed away in Los Angeles in 2006 at the age of 86.
